How Roof Area Is Calculated
Roof Area = (Length + 2×Overhang) × (Width + 2×Overhang) × Pitch Multiplier
The calculation starts with your building's footprint dimensions. We add the overhang on all sides since the roof extends beyond the walls. The pitch multiplier accounts for the slope - a steeper roof has more surface area than a flat one covering the same footprint.
The waste factor is then applied to account for cutting waste, damaged shingles, and installation errors. We recommend 10% for standard gable roofs, 15% for complex roofs with valleys, and 20% for very complex designs.

A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet of roof area. It's the standard unit used in the roofing industry. For example, a 2,000 sq ft roof equals 20 squares. When ordering materials, you'll typically order by the square.
Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6/12 means 6 inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run). You can measure this using a level and tape measure: hold a level horizontally from the roof surface, measure 12 inches along the level, then measure vertically down to the roof. That vertical measurement is your pitch.
Waste accounts for material lost to cutting, damaged shingles, and installation errors. Even simple roofs need about 5-10% extra. Complex roofs with valleys, dormers, or multiple angles need 15-20% extra. It's better to have slightly too much than to run short mid-project.
