How Material Estimation Works
Roofing Squares = Sq Ft ÷ 100

Material estimation starts with your roof's square footage, converted to roofing squares (100 sq ft each). Different shingle types require different numbers of bundles per square: 3-tab needs 3 bundles, architectural needs 4, and luxury shingles need 5.
The waste factor accounts for cutting waste around edges, valleys, and dormers. Complex roofs with many angles need more waste allowance than simple gable roofs.

It depends on the shingle type: 3-tab shingles require 3 bundles per square, architectural/dimensional shingles require 4 bundles per square, and luxury/designer shingles require 5 bundles per square. Architectural shingles are thicker and cover less area per bundle.
Use 5-10% for simple gable roofs with few valleys. Use 15% for roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, or skylights. Use 20% for very complex roofs with many angles and architectural features. It's always better to have a few extra bundles than to run short.
Standard underlayment rolls cover approximately 432 sq ft (4 sq). Calculate: (Total Sq Ft × 1.1 for overlap) ÷ 432 = Number of rolls. Always round up and buy one extra roll for complex roofs.
Standard nailing requires approximately 320 nails per square for field shingles, plus nails for starters and ridge caps. Most contractors plan for 2-3 lbs of nails per square to be safe. A 5lb box of coil nails covers about 2 squares.
