How Soffit Ventilation Is Calculated
Intake NFA = (Attic Area ÷ Ratio × 144 ÷ 2) - Existing Exhaust
The IRC requires 1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor area when a vapor barrier is present (or 1:150 without). This total must be split 50/50 between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge/gable). We calculate the required intake NFA and subtract any existing exhaust vents to determine additional soffit venting needed.

Soffit vents provide intake airflow for attic ventilation. Without proper intake, hot air gets trapped, causing moisture buildup, mold, and premature roof failure. They work with exhaust vents (ridge, gable) to create airflow that keeps your attic dry and cool.
The IRC requires 1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor space when a proper vapor barrier is installed. If no vapor barrier exists, the ratio increases to 1:150. This ensures adequate airflow to prevent moisture accumulation.
You need 50% of total ventilation in soffits (intake). Divide your required intake area by the Net Free Area (NFA) of your chosen vent type. For example, if you need 288 sq in of intake and use 16"×8" vents (56 sq in NFA each), you need 6 vents (288 ÷ 56 = 5.14, rounded up).
NFA is the actual open area of a vent after accounting for screens, louvers, and framing. A 16"×8" vent might measure 128 sq in physically, but only has 56 sq in of NFA. Always use NFA values, not physical dimensions, when calculating ventilation requirements.
You can have too much exhaust without enough intake, which pulls conditioned air from your home through ceiling penetrations. Balance is key - aim for 50% intake (soffit) and 50% exhaust (ridge/gable). Never have more than 60% exhaust.
