Measure the length × width of your attic floor space

sq in

Total NFA of existing ridge vents, gable vents, or other exhaust vents

IRC requires more ventilation if no vapor barrier is present

How Soffit Ventilation Is Calculated

Intake NFA = (Attic Area ÷ Ratio × 144 ÷ 2) - Existing Exhaust

The IRC requires 1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor area when a vapor barrier is present (or 1:150 without). This total must be split 50/50 between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge/gable). We calculate the required intake NFA and subtract any existing exhaust vents to determine additional soffit venting needed.

Vent Types & NFA Values:

  • 16"×8" rectangular: 56 sq in
  • 16"×4" rectangular: 28 sq in
  • Continuous: 9 sq in per linear foot
  • 4" round: 12 sq in
  • 3" round: 7 sq in
